We’re Running Out of Places to Just Be

Anyone who lives in the suburbs of a large city has felt the struggle of going to the big city only to be shocked having to constantly ask for bathroom keys, pins, or buy something before you’re allowed a wee. Why is this? Safety? Profit? Staffers not wanting to clean the bathroom?

I feel like we are running out of places to ‘just be’. You’ll say, Rhian we have always had a place.

The library! But even librarians keep an eye on loiterers, and some have even made cafes inside them to make extra money because the local government doesn’t give them nearly enough money to sustain themselves.

You’ll say again, but Rhian there are malls! Go window shopping! You dont have to buy anything. To which I say respectfully, that is a load of bullcrap. When have you ever gone to the mall and walked around then left buying ‘nothing at all’ while you were there. Surely eventually you saw starbucks and could go for a latte, no? Then it’s around 2pm and you saw that they have a sonic in the food court. One hot dog couldn’t hurt right? Then suddenly if you’re like me, you’ve suddenly left the mall with 5 books from the amazon bookstore and 6 little trinkets from Hot Topic. To me, window shopping is a myth.

The mall is least of all a place to ‘just be’, dont let the couches and chairs in between the Victoria’s secret and…
