How To Not Feel Like People Hate You

To be honest, I’m still figuring it out myself

It’s a very vicious cycle. Someone says something. Something that was vague but kind of sounded like it was targeted to you and kind of sounded like they thought you were an idiot and don’t understand anything. Suddenly that coworker hates you, all your coworkers hate you and your manager is going to fire you because you’re a failure at everything.

WOAH. Let’s take a deep breath and a step back.

As my therapist always says, let’s check the facts:

  • Someone said something that was addressed to everyone
  • It was not personal
  • No one hates me
  • No one has ever told me directly that they dislike me here
  • I did nothing wrong
  • I am not going to be fired.

These are de-escalation techniques for anxiety and a method that I’ve had to use almost every day for the last week. But, it’s extremely helpful. It helps me see the bigger picture and stop to actually acknowledge and think about whether my feelings are rational, and if they make sense compared to life evidence.
